‘Neglect of basic duties in education a worry’

N R Madhava Menon, emeritus professor at National Law School of India University, told Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS),Mumbai, students Friday that renouncing practices derogatory to the dignity of women was a fundamental duty of every citizen. He said if this was taught in schools, colleges and families,India could have avoided the recent series of incidents against women.

“It shocked the conscience of the world. Can draconian laws redeem the respect women deserve in society? One finds a complete code of ethics to be followed by every citizen reflected in fundamental duties, which seems to have not received the attention it deserves from educational administrators,” he said.

Menon was addressing the 73rd TISS convocation. On the first day of the two-day convocation,410 students received degrees. Menon said a cause for recurring communal conflicts and insurgencies parts of the country was neglect of fundamental duties in education of the youth.

“Professional ethics are seldom taught or learnt in professional schools and colleges. In this situation,it is too much to expect even the so-called educated to appreciate what responsible citizenship is and why it is necessary to know duties… look at the ease with which lawyers and doctors go on strike in this country, throwing to the winds safety and security of clients and patients. Do they ever think about the legitimate interests and expectations of people in distress while asserting so-called rights?”

Menon said citizen neglect of corruption in public life had plunged to such depths, mafia gangs with strong links with parties in power were prepared to wipe out whistleblowers.
