A 70-year-old who had served 20 years in jail on murder charges was killed on Friday allegedly by the son of his victim. The family of Bhagwati Prasad alias Dhundu said that he lived in fear of such an attack since the time he was released six years ago, after his remaining jail term was waived off by the state government.
Prasad had been convicted along with two others to life term for the killing of Brij Bhushan Singh, who was beaten to death in 1976. Prasad and Singh both belonged to Pachkhara village in Rae Bareli district.
After Prasad’s arrest, his family had shifted to the adjacent Tula Singh Ka Purva village, to his in-laws’ house.
Prasad’s family has filed an FIR accusing Singh’s son Pappu Singh of killing him. Prasad’s body was found inside a hay stack with hands tied and injury and strangulation marks. An autopsy confirmed he had been strangulated.
Unchahar police station SHO R K Mishra said they were collecting details of the enmity between the two families.
Prasad’s son Umesh said Prasad had gone to their tubewell on Thursday night after having his meal. That was the last time the family saw him.
The 70-year-old used to sleep near there to guard their crop.
“My father was released from jail in 2008 and since then we had been taking every precaution to ensure his safety,” said Umesh.
Prasad and the two co-convicts were released before their term ended because they were above 60 years of age. The other two have since died.
