The NCP has chosen young and dedicated candidates for the October 13 assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh which witnessed frequent defections in the past.
We have been very choosy in selecting our candidates. They are young, educated and known for their commitment, NCP leader Purno A Sangma told reporters.
The senior Sangma who together with daughter Agatha Sangma who is the Union Minister of state for Rural Development and state party president L Wanglat are on the campaign trail, said We took a written commitment from them on stamp papers that they will not switch loyalty as witnessed in the past.
We refused ticket to one of the two former NCP MLAs who defected to Congress, but when denied ticket again approached us, Sangma said.
The Congress had won 33 seats in the 60-member outgoing assembly. The BJP had held 9 seats,NCP and Arunachal Congress two each and Independents 14.
All MLAs of BJP and NCP later switched over to the Congress, while the independents and Arunachal Congress legislators either joined the Congress or provided outside support leaving the house without a single opposition member.
