In a press statement issued Tuesday, Mumbai mayor Snehal Ambekar blamed Opposition members for “making a mountain of a molehill” and blowing her statements out of proportion. She had reportedly compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Hitler in an interview with a city tabloid just a day before.
The mayor said, “The Opposition party members have created a wordplay by saying things that I have never uttered against PM Narendra Modi. The statement has been blown out of proportion. I have immense respect for the PM and I have not and will never utter any word to defame him.”
She also asked her colleagues to “not fall in the trap” created by Opposition members and appealed to the media to not publish statements that could be distorted.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporators, on Tuesday, protested outside Ambekar’s cabin at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demanding a clarification on her statement about Modi.
The BJP corporators shouted slogans outside the mayor’s cabin and also demanded that she deny the statement publicly.
Sandeep Deshpande, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader and standing committee member said, “Ambekar has no sense in the kind of statements that she is making. She is landing herself in one controversy after another.”
