Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria — in a meeting between senior IPS and senior police inspectors across the police zones in Mumbai, pointed to a “great rift” between the constabulary and the seniors in the police hierarchy.

Taking stock of issues plaguing the force in the wake of the “shootout at Vakola” police station, Maria called for “efforts to bridge the gap between the constabulary and the officers”.

“The incident exposed the rift between officers and the lower-rung police personnel, and therefore, the Police Commissioner has asked us to take steps necessary to mend the situation and to ensure better interaction and exchange of opinion between ground-level police personnel and their superiors,” said a senior police officer.

The meeting saw the senior police hierarchy looking for ways to deal with “stress” and excess work hours of the constabulary.

The Vakola incident comes at a time, when the police force is burdened by additional bandobast duty, with the IPL taking maximum security hours, followed by immediate police bandobast for the Salman Khan hit-and-run judgment.

One of the issues discussed was allocation of work and a study of the ranks and their profiles.

The meeting comes a week after top police officers decided to hunt for any “black sheep” in a bid to weed out personnel displaying “moral turpitude” from the police force.
