MPSC,UoP exam dates clash,students fume

Even after the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) exam dates were changed once owing to overlaps with other state-conducted exams, the problem still persists.

Even after the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) exam dates were changed once owing to overlaps with other state-conducted exams, the problem still persists. MPSC exams,to be held on May 26,will now clash with the final year engineering exams of the University of Pune (UoP). Earlier, the MPSC prelims exams were scheduled for May 13.

As many as 50,000 students will take the engineering final year exams this year. While the change in the MPSC dates were announced on April 19,UoP declared its exam timetable on April 27. Some students have alleged that they submitted applications stating their problems but no decision has been taken by the varsity yet.

“On April 29,we went to the exam co-ordinator’s office and submitted an application stating our problem. However, last week when we enquired if anything has been done about the clashing dates of the exams,we were told they have not received any such application. Now,just a few days away from the exam,we cannot afford to go to the university and waste our preparation time,” said a final year student requesting anonymity.

Another student said,“MPSC has still not declared the exam centres. If I get my centres away from Pune or far flung corners then I will end up missing one of the exams as there is just about an hour’s gap between the two exams. In fact, writing two exams on the same date will also be very hectic.”

Anna Tapre (24),a police official said,“For working professionals like us it is very difficult to get leave for an entire day. Most of the times,MPSC exams are held on Sundays. I’m not sure if I will get a leave on a Saturday (May 26) to appear for the test.” When asked about the issue,CM Chitale, controller of exams,UoP said,“We have not received any such complaints from students yet. Unless they approach us,we cannot really do anything about it.”

Deputy registrar Vitthal Sathe said,“While over 50,000 students will appear for the engineering exams at the university, only a small percentage of them appear for the MPSC exams. Also,as per the university protocol,we can shift exam dates only if dates of two different departments etc overlap. For bodies outside the university jurisdiction,we cannot shift our dates.”
