Unidentified gunmen shot dead a Sarpanch (village head) in North Kashmir Baramulla District on Saturday afternoon. This is the third fatal attack on village Sarpanchs’ in past three weeks.
Police officials said that Ghulam Ahmad Bhat was killed by the militants in Bomai village in Sopore of Baramulla district.
“The Sarpanch has been shot dead by the militants,” Inspector General of Police Abdul Gani Mir told The Indian Express.
On December 13, a sarpanch was kidnapped and killed by the militants at Hygam village of Sopore.
Earlier, on November 30, militants shot dead a National Conference Sarpanch, Mohammad Sultan Bhat in Shopian district of South Kashmir. On the next day militants struck again in Shopian when
another Sarpanch was attacked and injured in Zainapora village.
