Parts of southern Jharkhand,including Chaibasa and Jamshedpur,were rocked by a mild earthquake on Thursday morning,injuring five students and a teacher of a college here.
The tremor,measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale,was felt at 10.14 am,said the Central Seismological Observatory (CSO),Shillong.
Many people rushed out of their houses in Chaibasa,the district headquarter of West Singhbhum. The students and a teacher of Gyanchandra Jain Commerce College at Chaibasa were injured when a stampede like situation occurred as everybody tried to get out of the college building,principal Nageswar Prasad said. Four of the injured students were hospitalised.
The quake could not be registered in the district as it does not have any mechanism for it. The CSO said the epicentre of the tremor was at 22.6 deg North latitude and 87.5 deg East longitude.
Deputy Commssioner Sunil Kumar said no loss of life or property was reported. The earthquake was also felt in Jamshedpur.
