The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued an advisory to states anticipating “communal tension” that could flare up over issues like use of loudspeakers, bursting of fire crackers and even forcible collection of donations.
In light of this, the Centre has asked the states to ensure proper security at places of worship and communally sensitive areas. The MHA specifically asked authorities in Delhi, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai and Vadodara to remain alert.
In the advisory, the ministry pointed out that the country had witnessed communal incidents during Ganesh Chaturthi, Durga Puja and noted that the atmosphere was strained in some states during Bakrid.
“Since Diwali/Kali puja will be celebrated on October 23 and would attract huge crowd, issues like bursting of firecrackers, use of loud speakers, raising of provocative slogans, forcible collection of donations, installation of idols at disputed places, acts of misbehaviour and eve teasing could lead to communal tension,” the advisory said.
“It is necessary that continued vigil and proper security arrangements are made at places of worship especially in communally sensitive areas,” it said.
