It was an emotional reunion at the Vidya Sagar Institute of Mental Health in Amritsar on Tuesday after hospital authorities finally tracked down the relatives of a mentally challanged man who had gone missing for 20 years at his native village of Chaudharpur near Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh.
Ram Kumar (around 45 years old),who according to his brother Shiv Kumar had gone missing in an unstable mental condition nearly 20 years ago,was among the 19 Indians repatriated by Pakistan on August 14,2007.
Since then,he has been undergoing treatment at Vidya Sagar Institute of Mental Health at Amritsar. Hospital authorities managed to trace his address after approaching the resident commissioner of Uttar Pradesh in New Delhi. On Tuesday,his brother and other family members finally took custody of him. Ram Kumar was identified by his brother from his little finger,a part of which he had lost during an accident before he went missing.
Hospital Director Dr B L Goel said Ram Kumar was immediately identified his brother. His mental condition has shown improvement following treatment at the hospital over the years, Goel added.
Shiv Kumar,the physically challenged brother of Ram Kumar,said the family had searched for him at places in Uttar Pradesh after he went missing and had lost hope of ever seeing him again.
Shiv Kumar said that his father had died before Ram went missing. Our mother died a few years after he went missing, he added.
