V Shanmuganathan (66), Meghalaya
An RSS activist and Tamil writer, V Shanmuganathan has been in-charge of several BJP cells. His website says he is a “Post Graduate in Political Science with a gold medal”. He looked after BJP’s activities in Tamil Nadu for 20 years. His elevation as Governor is significant as the party is gearing up for a poll battle in Tamil Nadu.
Droupadi Murmu (58)
Sources in BJP feel the party decided to appoint Droupadi Murmu, a tribal leader from Odisha, as Jharkhand Governor after it faced criticism for nominating a non-tribal CM in the state. Murmu, a former Odisha minister, was twice elected to the Assembly on a BJP ticket. She is the first woman from Odisha to be appointed for the gubernatorial post.
Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa (71)
A 1968-batch IAS officer, Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa retired as Assam chief secretary in 2004. Known for his strong views on illegal migration from Bangladesh and military-type discipline, he served in various remote areas of the Northeast, including in Mizo Hills during the peak of the Mizo rebellion.
Tathagata Roy (70), Tripura
Tathagata Roy, a national executive member of BJP and former chief of the West Bengal unit, has been a supporter of the Modi government’s policies on the social media. An engineer, Roy has unsuccessfully contested two Lok Sabha elections. An RSS activist since 1986, Roy’s elder brother Saugata Roy is a senior member of Trinamool Congress.
