Ahead of election year, the run-up to the BJP conclave on May 7 may well be a tightrope walk for new state unit president Devendra Fadnavis who is expected to pronounce the roadmap for the 2014 Assembly and Lok Sabha polls in the state at the meet.
He has to put in place a team, ensuring a balance between factions within the party and making sure all regions and sections are adequately represented, with no meritorious leader being left out.
A senior BJP leader said,The executive meeting will be held in Mumbai where 2,500 delegates from across the state will participate.
The party has been facing an internal tussle between supporters of deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde and former BJP national president Nitin Gadkari and each side is expected to bid for an upper hand in the new team.
Although Fadnavis sounded cool about it,saying it will be a smooth exercise conducted through collective decision-making,several second-rung leaders see it differently.
One of them candidly stated,In the backdrop of the power tussle seen ahead of his appointment, setting up the team will be a formidable task. Fadnavis had been backed by Munde while Gadkari was against his elevation as BJP state chief.
The state unit had a jumbo team of more than 78 members but what is crucial now is filling the limited posts of general secretaries and vice-presidents.
A backroom leader, who is participating in the team selection, said,Ahead of elections, the party will ensure that all regions, factions and meritorious leaders are accommodated.
To ensure there is no common window for friction, the party organisation plans to pre-determine the roles of Gadkari and Munde with the help of senior central leaders. Indications are that Gadkari will be kept busy in Delhi while Munde will be asked to be pro-active in Maharashtra. The BJP central unit has decided that Munde will lead the state campaign in 2014,said a party source.
Since Fadnavis has worked with both Gadkari and Munde,he will strike a balance, a senior leader said.
