With questions being raised on Sanjay Dutt’s eligibility to contest Lok Sabha election,Samajwadi Party said it could field his wife Manyata from Lucknow if the film star is unable to fight because of legal issues.
“If Sanjay Dutt does not get permission from the court to contest elections,I will request both Dutt and my party to allow his wife Manyata to contest in his place,” Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh said.
Singh, however, added that he is hopeful that Dutt will get the permission to contest elections.
“Doubts are being raised whether Sanjay Dutt will contest or not. He will definitely fight the elections. We will appeal to the court to grant him permission for it,” Singh said.
“Navjot Sidhu had got court’s permission to contest election. Sanjay is also likely to get permission for it on the line of Sidhu. Sidhu had already talked to Dutt,” he added.
The party named the 49-year-old superstar Dutt as its candidate in the Lok Sabha elections from Lucknow on Wednesday when it announced the first list of its candidates for Uttar Pradesh.
However, legal experts have raised question over Dutt’s eligibility to contest polls as he has been convicted under the Arms Act and is out on bail.
The party has decided to seek the permission of the Supreme Court, where the matter is pending, and the Election Commission to field him, party sources said.
The SP leader informed Dutt will remain with him and the Bhojpuri actor Manoj Tiwari (SP’s candidate from Gorakhpur) in Lucknow on December 17.
Tiwari will also be present in Gorakhpur during the ‘Thu Thu Divas’ (Spitting Day) being organised by SP on January 15 (Mayawati’s birthday),Singh added.
