Students’ bodies of the Hmar and Paite (Zomi) tribes based in Aizawl on Sunday condemned the bills – passed by the Manipur government and that had escalated into the ongoing crisis in the neighbouring state – as “anti-tribal”.

The Hmar Students’ Association and Siamsinpawlpi, the Zomi student body, also said setting “1951 as the base year to identify the indigenous people is an attempt to grab the ancestral lands of the indigenous tribal people.”

“The joint meeting urges the (Manipur) government to repeal or review all the bills and demands punitive action against those security personnel involved in the firing,” the students’ bodies said in a statement, while also demanding a central probe into the deaths.
