A man in Najafgarh set ablaze last week his wife of 15 years because he allegedly hated her dark complexion and often fought with her about the clothes she wore.
On the day Sundar set her on fire,he had an argument with her after she refused to wear a sari instead of a salwar kameez that,according to him,suited her skin tone. The 33-year-old housewife,Manju,escaped with minor burns on her abdomen and chest.
The man has been arrested and a case of attempted murder pressed against him.
The police said Sundar was angry when he found his wife in a salwar kameez in the morning. “He started abusing,and instructed me to get out of the salwar kameez because I am dusky. He told me I should wear a sari instead. When I refused,he hit me with a rod and went out,” Manju said in her complaint to the police.
In the meantime,Manju sent her sons – nine-year-old Vishal and five-year-old Lakshya – to inform her parents,who live a couple of blocks away,about the fight. A few moments after the children left,Sundar returned and began abusing her again,the police said.
“When I retaliated and asked him to stop,he picked up a bottle of kerosene and doused me with it. He then lit a matchstick and set me ablaze,” she alleged.
Sundar fled the scene after the incident. Manju,the police said,managed to douse the fire by pouring water. She rushed to her parents’ house,from where she was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. Doctors said Manju suffered minor burn on her abdomen and chest.
