Jagir Singh,a Punjab Roadways employee, who works in the Khanna depot bus, cheated death on Wednesday. Usually,he asked this colleague Surinder Singh to give him a lift till Khanna. But on Wednesday,Surinder was in a hurry and did not stop for Jagir Singh on the main road outside Sirhind bus stand. Later, the bus, which Surinder was driving, fell into Bhakra canal near Sirhind. All passengers of the bus are presumed dead.
Jagir had taken a lift a number of times, but God desired something else, said Kuljit Singh,a resident of Sirhind, who knew the Roadways employee.
While Surinders body is yet to be recovered,he has been booked by the police for negligent driving.
Meanwhile, around 20 divers have been pressed on the job to find bodies. Ashu Malik, the leader of the divers, said: CCTV cameras need to be installed near main points of the bridge where accidents often happen. But the administration never bothers. On an average,we take out four to five bodies from this canal nearly every day. If CCTV cameras have been installed,at least the victims can be identified and it helps in search operations.
Claiming that earlier, cars have fallen into the canal,he added: A few areas of this canal have become suicide points. Since the last one month, there has been one suicide daily here but the administration never wakes up.
