After a wait of close to 11 months, the new Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi will be finally inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday evening.
The guest house for people from Maharashtra was to be inaugurated by former President Pratibha Patil in July 2012. However, the inauguration was cancelled after BJP leader Kirit Somaiya claimed irregularities in tenders to benefit companies part-owned by family of PWD minister Chhagan Bhujbal who carried out the constuction.
The tender for construction of Maharashtra Sadan was awarded to K S Chamankar in 2006.
The project cost escalated from Rs 52 crore to over Rs 154 crore and Somaiya claimed companies that got many of the sub-contracts belonged in part to members of the Bhujbal family.
