The father and lone survivor of the Dalit family which committed suicide on April 22 tried to escape from PGI Rohtak on Friday. Mahinder Partap Singh was found missing from the hospital at around 4 am. Police teams were dispatched for his search who found him after a tip-off that he was on the highway asking for a lift to Jhajjar. He was returned to the hospital around 10.30 am.

“Singh wabted to go to Jhajjar and was asking for a lift. When somebody identified him,he ran away and tried to hide. We found him and brought him back to the hospital,” said a police official.

Mahinder Partap Singh was one of five family members to have consumed poison on April 22. Singh had told a team of National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) that the family had to consume poison due to ‘excessive pressure’ from the local police who wanted to know the whereabouts of their daughter who was a rape victim. Four of the family members died. Their daughter is still missing.

Local Station House Officer,Jai Bhagwan of Uklana Police Station had called Singh on April 21,a day before the family committed suicide by taking ‘Sulphas’ tablets,to know the whereabouts of the missing rape victim. The rape case is in a fast-track court at Hisar and as the girl’s statement has not been recorded, the court has been postponing the matter for around four months.
