Thirty-two-year-old Ram Chandar, who was arrested on charges of beheading his wife over suspicion of extra-marital affair, was on Saturday found hanging in Hardoi district jail where he was lodged.
While the jail officials could not point towards any reason even as they claimed Chandar has committed suicide, the latter’s family members blamed the officials for driving Chandar into taking the extreme step by constantly harassing him.
No suicide note was found on Chandar.
Angered over the death, his family, along with others in support, staged protest outside the jail. The protesters relented only after officials from the district administration promised that an inquiry into Chandar’s death will be carried out.
Giving details, Jail Superintendent Vijay Prakash Verma said on Saturday afternoon, all the prisoners were brought out from their barracks for meal but Chandar had managed to slip away. His body was later found hanging from an iron rod outside the barrack near the washroom. Verma added that the autopsy has been done and the body handed over to the family.
On August 22, police had arrested Chandar when he was on his way to Bilgram police station carrying his wife Ram Kanti’s head in one hand and a sharp-edged weapon in the other.
