RJD chief Lalu Prasad met Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, days after he called on party chief Sonia Gandhi, signaling that an alliance between the two parties could be on the cards.
While the Bihar Congress leadership and a section of the high command is in favour of an alliance with Lalu, Rahul is reportedly not very keen due to the RJD chief’s “tainted” image. But party sources said Thursday’s meeting indicates a “forward movement” and claimed an alliance was being formalised.
Earlier, Rahul had junked the ordinance brought out by the UPA government to protect convicted lawmakers from disqualification — ostensibly a move to protect Lalu.
“Lalu cannot contest anyway. We can convince him to field candidates with a clean image,” said a senior leader. Sources said Lalu also met AICC general secretary Shakeel Ahmed earlier this week. Sources added that Lalu is likely to meet Sonia in the coming days and indicated that an alliance could be formalised after the AICC session on January 17.
