An animal rights activist in Bangalore, who had lodged a complaint against three students who had allegedly killed and cooked their pet dog, has claimed that the intervention of animal rights activist and Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi ensured that the police registered his complaint and arrested the students.

Three students from Manipur have been arrested and booked under IPC’s Section 428 (mischief by killing or maiming animal of the value of Rs 10 or upwards) after a complaint was lodged by their neighbour Chandrashekar alias Raj Gowda, an animal rights activist.

According to the complainant, the police initially refused to file a case. Animal rights activists, who had gathered at the police station, called Maneka and informed her about the incident. She then reportedly called up the police and convinced them to register a case.

“They arrested the students only after Maneka Gandhi asked them to file a case,” said Raj Gowda. The police, however, denied that the union minister had intervened in the matter.

The three students have since been released on bail. One of the students told The Sunday Express that he and his friends had killed the dog after it had bitten him, but denied cooking it.

He claimed that he and his friends had thrown the dog’s body in a nearby lake.
