Ten days after he was kidnapped, the body of 12-year-old Rohan Guchchai was found dismembered in a manhole in Kalyan Sunday.
Four men, employees of the boy’s father, a jewellery designer , were arrested on Saturday night and the police are investigating the possibility of the involvement of others.
Officers said the suspects had been careful to make their ransom calls from public pay phones but slipped up by calling the boy’s father from a stranger’s cellphone on April 21 outside Fortis Hospital in Kalyan. Thane JCP V V Lakshminarayana said CCTV footage from a number of locations and placing officers strategically near PCOs helped to eventually identify and arrest the suspects.
The conspiracy was allegedly hatched by the man who the Guchchais considered a ‘son’ and not just a trusted employee. The police said revealing his name would hamper the investigation. The offence occurred between 11.30 am and 11.45 am on April 17, when Rohan was playing in the building compound with his friends.
