The Kerala High Court on Thursday granted bail to a Swiss national Jonathan Baud, who was arrested for visa condition violations after he attended a public meeting to commemorate a suspected Maoist leader Sinoj in Thrissur.

Baud, doing a master-level economic history course in the University of Geneva, was arrested on July 28 at Thriprayar, where the meeting was held.

Police did not get any evidence to prove Baud’s suspected Maoist links. Besides, he had not been in touch with any Maoist leader in Kerala after reaching the state on July 25 from Karnataka along with his friend Valeri.

The judicial first class magistrate at Kodungalloor did not grant bail to Baud. Subsequently, he moved High Court.

Meanwhile, Baud’s counsel had produced letters from his professors in Geneva University, showing him as a bona fide student interest on Left movement.
