A woman faculty with a government-run college, who also writes scripts for Malayalam films, has been asked by college authorities to explain the “indecent behavior’’ of kissing her husband during “kiss in the street’’ recently held in Kozhikode to protest against moral policing.

Deedi Damodaran and her husband Premchand had kissed on a street on December 7 to express their solidarity with the agitation. Premchand was even beaten by Hanuman Sena, which had threatened to thwart the event.

Damodaran teaches English at a college under Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD) in Kozhikode.

Over a month into the incident, Damodaran Wednesday got a notice from her principal seeking an explanation about her participation in the protest. The action stemmed from a letter purportedly written by a group of anonymous parents to the IHRD director.

According to the notice, the letter said the parents fear that students may deviate from the moral path due to the teacher’s action. The notice also said the teacher participated in the agitation without obtaining prior sanction.

Damodaran said: “If a section of people find fault with something, we cannot go by that opinion. The agitation was not banned by police. None of the participants was arrested. I had kissed my husband, that too only as a gesture. As a teacher, I ask students to kiss not to kill”.

The teacher also said the protest was held on a Sunday. “Where is the ground that I had violated code of conduct. Why does the government not take action against employees who drink liquor after office hours if the code of conduct is applicable beyond duty hours,” she said.

IHRD director Dr S Sheela said her office got a letter signed by a group of parents seeking disciplinary action against the teacher. “Based on that, I have sought an explanation,” she said.
