Stung by the recent trend of converted Christians returning to Hinduism, the Kerala budget has made a proposal to set up a new commission to study how Dalit Christians could be brought to mainstream society.
The budget presented by Finance Minister K M Mani has made an allocation of Rs 5 crore as an interim measure for the purpose. Mani, a Catholic, is chairman of Christian-dominated Kerala Congress (M). Converted Christian community in Kerala has a population of 20 lakh, as per official records.
Recently, several converted Christians had embraced Hinduism as part of VHP’s ‘ghar wapsi’ programme. Converts have a story of neglect in kerala. Mainstream Christians never treated them as equals. This made many converts reconvert.
