A team from the Amboli police on Monday found a head and arm in a bag in a jungle at Kumbharli Ghat near Chiplun, which they claimed were the remains of Karan Kakad (28).
The aspiring producer had been untraceable since March 6 after being kidnapped. According to police officers, other body parts were also scattered in the same location.
Police sources confirmed Kakad was killed at his residence in Andheri (West) by three men arrested for Arun Tikkus murder the same day he went missing. After allegedly murdering Kakad, his killers chopped his body to dispose of it and drove down to the spot where the remains were found, officers said.
Kakad, who was originally from Delhi and had been staying in the city for the past year, had been missing since March 6 along with his BMW car, gold ornaments,iPod,mobile phone and laptop, collectively valued at Rs 45.44 lakh, the police said. Officers had voiced apprehensions that he may have been murdered by his kidnappers.
Vijay Palande, the main accused in the case, revealed that he along with Dhananjay Shinde and Manoj Gajkosh had gone to Kakads rented residence in Oberoi Springs Tower in Andheri (West) on March 6 and killed him. They also chopped the body and disposed it of, said a senior police officer who did not wish to be named.
The Amboli police have found two bags missing from Kakads house and suspect his killers used them to carry his body. In the Tikku murder case, the accused had brought a bag along with them to dispose of his body and we suspect Palande might have also disposed of Kakads body in a bag, said Pratap Dighavkar,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 9).
On Monday, four police teams were sent to different locations, including Pune,Satara and Ratnagiri,to trace Kakads body. Palande allegedly told the police that he had dumped the body on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway but was not sure of the exact location.
Police sources also claimed Kakad had recently cracked a deal that fetched him Rs 88 lakh, and Palande targetted him when he learnt of this. Palande had taken a loan of Rs 15 lakh from Kakad, saying a friend needed the money, sources said.
According to officers probing the case,Kakads neighbour Simran Sood a model who is allegedly Palandes paramour had found out about the deal in February. She also got to know that Kakad had paid the rent for the entire year and passed on this information to Palande, officers said.
The police also allegedly found that Kakad was in touch with a few bookies and was known to them as Prince.
Palande,Shinde and Gajkosh were booked by the Amboli police on Thursday for Kakads kidnapping. The trio was arrested two days earlier by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch for their alleged role in the murder of Tikku, who was found stabbed to death at his sons apartment in Lokhandwala on April 7. On Friday, the police arrested Sood for her alleged role in the kidnapping.
The police traced Kakads BMW car to a bungalow owned by one Rahul Mane in Pune on Sunday. Mane, who is a lawyer, had represented Palande in an earlier case, officers said. We have not given a clean chit to Mane, said a Crime Branch officer.
