The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Friday sought a special court’s permission to approach authorities in the US and Switzerland to ask for cyber evidence against Areeb Majeed, the Kalyan youth who allegedly travelled to Iraq to join the Islamic State group.
The agency sought Areeb’s video chat details through applications for the time period between May 25, 2014 and November 28, 2014.
Areeb was a student at a Panvel-based college before he allegedly decided to join the extremist outfit along with three friends last May. He travelled there on a “ziarat visa”, used by pilgrims, and was flown back from Instanbul under NIA escort on November 28.
The agency has sought evidence from the US and Switzerland under Section 91 (summons to produce document or other documents for investigation) of the CrPC.
A source said that the agency has sought details to ascertain the identities of people from other countries Areeb spoke to and “terrorist groups” he was in contact with.
