Justice Deepak Gupta of Himachal Pradesh High Court has been elevated as the Chief Justice of the newly established Tripura High Court. Justice Gupta,who is the first judge from the state to be appointed chief justice of another high court,will be accorded formal farewell by way of a full court reference on Tuesday and will take charge next week.
Born on May 7,1955 at Nurpur in Kangra district in a family of lawyers,ha had started practicing as a lawyer at the Himachal High Court in 1978 and was appointed as judge on October 4,2004.
During his stint,Justice Gupta delivered many significant judgements on issues concerning environment and ecology of the state as head of the Green Bench.
In a landmark judgement,a Bench headed by him had imposed a cost of Rs 100 crore on JP Cement Company for violation of environmental laws. He also passed many other important orders such as banning the use of non-biodegradable packing of junk food,regulating the prices of essential drugs,framing of transfer policy,installation of GPS system in commercial vehicles and installation of electronic barriers on major entry points to the state
Justice Gupta also played a pivotal role in computerisation of the High Court. He also remained the Administrative Judge of various divisions of the state and also remained the executive chairman of the HP State Legal Services Authority.
On Monday,the High Court Staff Welfare Association hosted a farewell function in his honour. Justice Gupta praised the corruption free working culture of the staff and asked them to accept new technologies and ideas.
The acting Chief Justice,RB Misra,termed Justice Gupta as a genius and hoped that the Tripura will benefit from his judicial acumen.
