Moulvi, who was posted as SPO at Kashrian police post in Beoli area near Doda town was reportedly absconding with an INSAS rifle along with 60 rounds. Riaz, who was posted at District Police Lines in Doda, was missing with an AK-47 rifle along with 90 rounds.

Two former terrorists, who surrendered five years ago to later join the police force as Special Police Officers (SPOs), have deserted to rejoin the terrorist ranks in Doda district.

While senior police officers were tight-lipped over the matter, sources identified them as Ghulam Mohammad Mangnoo alias Moulvi alias Gulla tailor of Shah Mohalla in Doda and Riaz Ahmed of Dedni. The former had surrendered as district  commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba in before Doda  police in 2010, while the latter had surrendered before Kathua police as Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist the same year.

Both appear to have deserted along with their respective service weapons and ammunition last night, sources said, adding that police came to know about it when they did not report for duty at their respective places on Tuesday morning. Moulvi, who was also running a part-time  tailoring shop at Irfana mohalla, had been behind the grenade lobbing incident at a religious place in Doda town in 2004.

The police have launched searches for both the absconding SPOs. However, they were untraceable till reports last came in tonight.
