Mahila Congress workers continue to protest over AIIMS issue carrying out gherao of the official residence of Deputy Chief Minister and lawyers suspending work in courts in Jammu on Monday.
Holding bangles and raising slogans against BJP for acting as mute spectators to discrimination with the people of Jammu, women Congress workers led by their president Indu Pawar carried out gherao of the official residence of Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh at Canal Road here. Criticising BJP for remaining silent over the shifting of AIIMS meant for Jammu to the Valley, they even tried to enter into the bungalow but for the police who stopped them.
The demonstration continued for nearly an hour and later, the protesters dispersed. Singh, who happens to be BJP legislator from Billawar, was not present there at that time.
Meanwhile, normal working in state high court and its subordinate courts here got disrupted as lawyers suspended work in protest over the alleged shifting of AIIMS from Jammu to Valley. The call for strike was given by Jammu Bar Association. Raising slogans against BJP and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh, the demonstrators criticized state government for its decision to set up AIIMS in Valley even when it was announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for Jammu.
The BJP is a major ally of PDP in Mufti Sayeed led coalition government in the state as it secured the highest ever tally of 25 seats from Jammu region during the 2014 Legislative Assembly polls. To keep its support base intact in the region, though its leaders have been assuring people of getting similar medical facilities to them in Jammu also, there has been no let up in anger against them as many accuse them of betrayal by maintaining silence on various issues concerning people who voted them to power.
Panthers Party supremo Prof Bhim Singh criticized BJP for its failure to even whisper against the dictates of a “Kashmiri leader’’ Mufti Sayeed who not only said no to AIIMS for Jammu region, but also ruled out construction of artificial lake on river Tawi in presence of Deputy Chief Minister who has been an RSS volunteer and a university teacher. The Congress and National Conference have been working against the interests of people of Jammu since 1947 and Mufti Sayeed, who remained state Congress president for 18 years before floating PDP has been a natural ally of Kashmiri rulers, he said, accusing Mufti of even dumping the issue of resettlement of nearly 15 lakh refugees from Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir who have been living in “most disgraceful’’ conditions in Jammu city and its outskirts.
Awami National Conference too expressed concern over different voices emanating from the ruling PDP-BJP coalition over the construction of an artificial lake over Tawi. While Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed has described it “not feasible’’, the BJP leaders in the coalition government say that they were committed for its completion, pointed out ANC provincial president Gian Singh. To mislead people in the state, both the ruling coalition partners have also been speaking in different voices over the setting up of AIIMS in Jammu and resettlement of Pandits in the Valley, the ANC leader added.
The state unit of CPI (M) too criticized the PDP-BJP coalition government for having failed on various fronts like giving compensation to fruit growers and farmers affected by hail storm and incessant rains, augmentation of power infrastructure and bringing uniformity in public distribution system across the state. The party also demanded the state government to withdraw its new recruitment policy authorizing respective deputy commissioners appoint people on contractual basis.
