After the education institutions in Kashmir Valley suffered heavy damage due to the recent floods that marooned the Srinagar city and other parts of Kashmir Valley, the J-K government has decided to postpone all the school and university level examinations that were scheduled for October-November this year. The announcement, which came after the cabinet meeting that met on Friday evening under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, decided to conduct all the exams in the March next year instead of October-November.
“The annual examinations of the under-graduate classes of Kashmir division and winter zone of Jammu division shall be held in March 2015 instead of October-November 2014,” an official statement issued by the government said. “The same examination schedule shall apply in the Kashmir division and the winter zone of the Jammu division in the School Education Department.”
The statement added that the decision was taken in view of damages due to the floods. “The decision was taken in view of the damages caused to the infrastructure of schools and higher education institutions in the state by the floods,” it said.
Earlier on Friday evening a statement issued by the government had said that the exams from classes 1st to 12th class would be conducted in October-November which was withdrawn later. However, after the cabinet meeting, a fresh statement was issued that all the exams will be held in March next year
The announcement has brought a relief to students in the Valley. Many students believe that they can now “prepare well” for the examination.
“The decision has it own benefits as well as disadvantages. In next year, I will not get enough time to prepare for my 12th class examination which is more crucial for me,” Sanan Khan, a 11th standard student of Burn Hall School told The Indian Express. “Many students can now prepare well for the exams after the decision,” he said.
