Old rivalry caught up with a family in Lohardaga district Saturday night when its three members were kidnapped and killed by alleged Maoists.
Balkishore Shahdeo was on a hunting trip with brother Jal Kishore Shahdeo and son Pramod when he was kidnapped from Sahedpat village Saturday night. Their bodies were found early Sunday near Marayan jungle under the Jowang police station.
Maoist sources claim they were killed because they were police informers, but police say the incident is the latest chapter in an old tale.
“The Shahdeos resisted Left-wing extremists since they entered the area in 1991,” said Manoj Ratan Chothe, Lohardaga SP. The Shahdeos were landowners and of royal lineage, which made them a target for the rebels.
Since the family supports the BJP — Balkishore’s brother Lal Balmukund Nath was former chairman of the state pollution control board — the state government reacted with unprecedented alacrity.
Apart from Chief Minister Raghubar Das condemning the incident shortly in the morning, Union Minister Sudarshan Bhagat, state minister Nilkanth Singh Munda, Home Secretary N N Pandey, DGP D K Pandey and local MLA K K Bhagat rushed to Murmu village in Pesrar block, where the families of the victims live. DGP Pandey is in fact camping at Latehar for the night.
