After introducing a number of products and services under brand “Amma”, Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa Monday launched “Amma mobile phones” — a scheme under which women self-help group (SHGs) trainers in the state will get cellphones.
Jayalalithaa said ‘computerised’ cellphones, equipped with a special Tamil software, will be able to supervise the functioning of SHGs in terms of uploading data in registers and accessing various services and schemes.
Initially, 20,000 cellphones will be distributed at the cost of Rs 15 crore. The scheme is expected to benefit 6.08 lakh SHGs.
However, a senior official said unless the plan is targeting digitally-deprived sections of people living in remote villages, it doesn’t make sense.
