A senior Jaipur Metro official was run over by a train Wednesday afternoon at the Bais Godam railway station. Lalit Kumar, 57, deputy chief engineer with the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation, was taking his routine post-lunch stroll when he was overrun by the approaching luxury train Palace on Wheels. Railway officials said it could be either a case of accidental death or even suicide. A cellphone was found lying next to Kumar’s body and it is being speculated that he might have been talking to someone on the phone and could not notice the approaching train.

Jaipur Metro officials, however, said Kumar did not show any signs of depression and instead was happy after a recent notification ordering the return to his home department in Jaipur Development Authority and promoting him to the post of superintendent engineer. “He used to take a walk after lunch every afternoon near our office which is close to the accident site. He behaved normally earlier in the day and it is unlikely that he might have committed suicide. He might have walked across the railway tracks, taking a short cut instead of going through the railway crossing and met with the accident,” said a colleague.
