Italian marine moves SC to extend stay

“The deteriorating medical condition and family separation issues have deeply affected him (Latorre) psychologically and he has been advised continued therapy in his home environment,” the application mentioned before the bench by senior advocate Soli Sorabjee stated.

Latorre was on January 14 allowed to stay in Italy for another three months after he claimed that he had recently undergone a heart surgery and wanted to extend his stay for recuperation. This order was passed in less than a month after a previous plea for extension of stay was rejected by a bench led by Chief Justice H L Dattu.

The government had then said it had no objections to the marine’s plea and that the extension could be granted on identical conditions as in the past. The bench then allowed Latorre’s plea and sought a fresh undertaking from the Italian ambassador.

Latorre was in September last allowed for the first time to go to Italy for treatment after a brain stroke.
