Army on Saturday claimed to have foiled an infiltration bid on the Line of Control in Machil sector in Kupwara district killing an infiltrator.
Defense spokesman Lt Col N N Joshi confirmed the killing of an infiltrator in Machil sector. “Our troops have killed an infiltrator and recovered an AK rifle from the encounter site. Troops are still searching the area,’’ he said.
Officials, however, said that a group of infiltrators tried to sneak into the Valley near Sadnari post close to the LoC. The movement of militants was picked up by the troops and search operation was jointly launched by the Army and Border Security Forces. As search party reached near the militants, they opened fire.
Officials, however, said that there is possibility that more militants are hiding in the area.
On June 6, Army had foiled an infiltration bid in North Kashmir’s Nowgam sector killing three infiltrators. Earlier, four infiltrators were killed in Tanghdar sector soon after they sneaked into the Valley after scaling the LoC fence.
