With the face-off between the Indian and Chinese forces at Chumar sector in September still fresh in the minds of people, the two countries began their fourth joint military exercise at Aundh Military Station in Pune on Monday.
The 12-day training programme will focus on counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency tactics and the two armies will work together on firing of various weapons, handling and neutralisation of IEDs and conduct of cordon and search operations.
On Sunday, the Chinese contingent from the 13 Group Army, Chengdu Military Region, comprising one infantry company along with supporting staff landed at the Lohegaon airfield. The exercise is being held at a time when a recent BSF report stated that the Chinese Army is training Pakistan Army personnel in weapons.
Lt General Bobby Mathews, GOC Konark Corps — the only desert corps of the Indian Army and Lt General Shi Xiangyuan, Deputy Commander of Chengdu Military Command of the People’s Liberation Army, were present at the event. The parade was commanded by Lt Colonel Tian Jeiwen, the Commanding Officer of the PLA contingent.
