In race for DD top post: scientist, prof, bureaucrats

What has got many intrigued is the interest shown by people from unrelated fields to get appointed to this post.

A scientest, a professor in a Hindi University, an Income Tax Commissioner, and even a chargesheeted Doordarshan news correspondent are in the fray to be appointed as the next Director General of Doordarshan.

The term of the present DG Tripurari Sharan, a 1985-batch Bihar cadre IAS officer comes to an end this month and the hunt for his successor is already on. However, the fact that the Prasar Bharati Board — which will select the next Doordarshan DG — is itself working without a Chairperson, Member (Finance), Member (Personnel) and three of the six Part Time Members is something the new government will have to tackle first.

What has got many intrigued is the interest shown by people from unrelated fields to get appointed to this post. Those who have applied include an Adviser-cum-Scientist from Department of Science & Technology and a Director/Professor from Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha. Further, a DD news correspondent who’s been charged with “exhibiting gross indiscipline and insubordination” and has not reported to work for almost two years, too, has applied for the job, sources told The Indian Express.

Adding to the interesting mix of contenders for DD’s top job are four IAS officers — two working as Joint Secretaries at the Centre, one working with the UP government and one working as a Member in the National Highways Authority of India. Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer Supriya Sahu, currently serving as Joint Secretary in the I&B Ministry and Indian Information Service officer, Akshay Kumar Rout, who is currently working as a Director General in the Election Commission of India, too, have thrown their hats in the ring.

But the more serious bid for the post appears to be coming from within the Prasar Bharati, Doordarshan and All India Radio with as many as 10 of 19 contenders for the post working with these three organisations. AIR’s DG F Sheheryar and Doordarshan’s Director General (News) S M Khan are the two prominent contenders who have applied for this post. In addition, three ADGs from Doordarshan — Deepa Chandra, Dr Mahesh Joshi and Mukesh Sharma and one from AIR and two from Prasar Bharati have applied too.
