In charge of the IT cell of BJP in Panchmahals district, Nirav Parmar, was booked by Godhra police for allegedly uploading morphed photos of a Hindu god on Facebook. The photos shows the Hindu god showering petals on the dome of holy Muslim mosque Madina Sharif from the sky, which the complainant said hurt Muslim religious sentiments and could cause animosity and tension among people from two communities.
Four morphed photographs were uploaded on Parmar’s Facebook account as well as on the website, http://www.godhracity.com, on the evening of September 23. The pictures soon started circulating widely on another social media app, Whatsapp. In the FIR lodged at the Godhra A division police station late Wednesday night, complainant Abdul Majid Khan said that he received screen shot of the Facebook account of the accused with the photographs uploaded on it on a Whatsapp group, “No Entry.”
The picture shows the dome of Madina Sharif superimposed on the top of the city’s Nagina Mosque which looms in the background of a police chowky with a huge Shivling floating in the sky right on the top of the dome showering petals. On the foreground, some people are shown tugging a huge idol of Lord Ganesha. The Shivling has “Shri Ambika Chown Ganesh Mandal” written over it. Four such pictures were uploaded on Parmar’s Facebook account and on the website mentioned in the FIR.
Police booked Parmar under sections 295(A) and 153 (A) of Indian Penal Code, and section 66(A) of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008, for acting maliciously with the intention to outrage religious feelings, promoting religious animosity using images, spoken or written words, and for sending offensive messages using computers. “We are yet to arrest the accused. Currently, we are conducting investigation in the matter,” Godhra A division police inspector Parakram Singh Rathod said.
