A post graduate medical student of the Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh was killed inside an ICU allegedly by a ward boy, triggering an indefinite strike by junior doctors of the hospital, police said Friday.
Nurses found the body of Dr Sarita Tasniwal at 8 am Friday on a bed in the doctor’s resting room inside the ICU, with a disposable surgical knife inside the left side of her neck, police sources said.
Sources said Sarita had been working the night shift from 10 pm Thursday and was last seen at 5:30 am Friday when she went to the doctor’s rest room. The ICU’s ward boy, Khiru Mech, confessed to having killed Sarita, police said. Police suspect that Mech may have attempted to rape her and killed her when he was unable to do so. The junior doctors and students launched an indefinite strike in protest demanding security, particularly for women as well as punishment for Sarita’s killer and installation of CCTV in the ICUs.
Sarita, who hails from Sibsagar district, had passed her MBBS from the AMCH, sources said. She was to get married to a fellow doctor on July 7, they added.
