Immolations in Rajkot: One more dies,three men arrested

Hours after Bharat Dalvani,wife Asha and brother Girish were cremated,his sister-in-law Rekha succumbed to her burns Saturday,taking the death toll in the mass self-immolation bid by the Nepalese family to four.

Hours after Bharat Dalvani,wife Asha and brother Girish were cremated,his sister-in-law Rekha succumbed to her burns Saturday,taking the death toll in the mass self-immolation bid by the Nepalese family to four. The police arrested three people who had allegedly harassed the family.

Rekha,30,mother of two,set herself afire along with four family members at Rajkot Municipal Corporation Wednesday. She suffered more than 95 per cent burns and was battling for life since. Girish,35,Bharat,45, and Asha,40,had died Wednesday. Hasumati,60,the family’s matriarch,is in hospital in a critical condition.

Meanwhile,police have arrested Haresh Dhobi,Dushyant Tank and Rajesh Dholakia,all residents of Chhotunagar Cooperative Housing Society,in connection with the case.

The three persons were allegedly harassing the family to demolish their dwelling in Chhotunagar. The municipal corporation had termed the dwelling as “unauthorised construction.”

Meanwhile,Kshatriya community took out a rally in support of BJP councillors Rajbha Jhala and Kamlesh Miranni and submitted a memo to city police commissioner.

In his dying declaration,Girish had alleged harassment by the two councillors.

RMC has given Rs 25 lakh to the family’s kin as ex-gratia. Congress too has given the family Rs 3 lakh.
