Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Thursday said that if needed, he will be the first to court arrest in Haryana to protest the creation of a separate SGPC by the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government.
Talking to mediapersons at his residence, the CM said the SAD cannot remain a mute spectator to the division of the SGPC. “Can I sit at home and quietly watch as SGPC is broken? I have to do my duty,” he said.
Saying that he would be leading the morcha —- to be announced on July 27 at Amritsar —- Badal asserted that protests will only take place in Haryana. “There will be no protests in Punjab,” he said. “If the matter is resolved by the Centre before the morcha, then it is fine.”
When reminded that the last time he led a protest was the Kapuri morcha in 1982 over the SYL issue, the CM said, “It’s high time I renewed my license!”
Asked about the possibility of his resigning to lead the protest, he said, “I have made up my mind on what needs to be done. The announcement will be made on July 27. Like judges say — judgment has been reserved and will be announced later,” he said. “In any case, the decision of who heads the state or the party can be taken by SAD alone. I cannot take that decision.”
But will he stage a protest while he is Chief Minister?. To this he repiled, “I am a law-abiding citizen and will do everything within the law. All SAD movements have been peaceful .”
Explaining the “need” for such a movement, Badal said, “The SGPC is a historical institution which was created after intense struggle. It is not merely managing the gurdwaras but is also the protector of Sikhs across the world. If we allow this division, in the years to come there will be district-level SGPCs. The Congress is trying to divide the Sikhs.”
