Minutes after a CBI team arrested an Income-Tax officer red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a Lucknow-based builder Tuesday, his fellow officers assaulted the investigative team, injuring at least three of them, and also tried to snatch away the bribe money.
The anti-corruption branch of CBI said Income-Tax officer Niranjan Kumar had demanded a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from the builder to settle an issue of income-tax assessment for the financial year 2011-12. After he reportedly refused to look into the matter without getting the money, the builder contacted the CBI officials, who laid a trap.
While he was receiving the first instalment of Rs 2 lakh, CBI team raided his office at Income Tax Bhawan here, seized the money and arrested him, they said.
Members of Income Tax Officers’ Union soon gathered and tried to snatch away the bribe money. When CBI team resisted they were assaulted with fire extinguisher in which three agency officials, including an inspector level officer, sustained injuries.
