Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, who was taken off her duties as director in the partnership development division by the Ministry of External Affairs, said she has not violated any rules under the civil services act. Though she continues to hold the job, she is without any responsibilities and work at the moment.

The controversial diplomat invited action from the MEA, a week after she spoke to NDTV about her arrest and strip search in the United States last year. The statement from the MEA states Ms Khobragade did not take prior permission before making statements which was compulsory. As a result they have put her under the “compulsory watch”.

Speaking to Indian Express over the telephone, Ms Khobragade said, “I have not violated any code of conduct under the civil services act.” Citing section (9) of the act she explained, “I only spoke about my personal experience to clarify my stand on charges of illegal passports which is not in contravention to the act.

“I have not said a word against the relations between the two countries. Nor made any comment about my case in US related to ill-treatment to domestic help.”

My statements were within the ambit of the section(9) of the civil services rules of 1964, she reiterated.

She observed that within the ambit of the act if false charges are leveled against individual they can defend their case.

Ms Khobragade refused to speak on what would be her next plan of action. However, she indicated that as an individual, who has always discharged duties with integrity and responsibility, she would like to continue to work in Indian Foreign Services.

According to Ms Khobragade, “There were some false reports in the newspapers regarding illegality around my children’s passports and that I hid a fact that my children have American passports. There is nothing of that sort, I myself informed the government that my kids were born in the US and are considered US citizens.”

Ms Khobragade, a 1999 Indian Foreign Service officer and mother of two daughters, was arrested and strip-searched in New York in December last year on charges of ill-treating her domestic help. The incident had strained the relations between two countries.

The Indian government had taken up the matter with the US. Ms Khobragade has often dismissed the charges as false. She has returned to India.
