Mohammed Hanif Wasim, 27, who had joined ISIS this February and died in Syria two weeks ago, was engaged to a Hyderabad girl who is doing Bachelor of Dental Surgery, last September.
However, just before leaving for Syria from Dubai, Hanif called his father Mohammed Aleem and told him that he was not interested in marriage and that he was going to Syria to join the ISIS and wage jihad. He also called up his fiancé, apologized to her and asked her not to wait for him, but to get married to someone else.
“Fearing social stigma and police investigation, neither his family nor the girl mentioned this to anyone till now. About two weeks ago his father received a text message on his phone that Hanif had died. No one knows how he died and where, and the distraught family took some time to reveal,’’ an official said.
Hanif’s family hails from Mancherial in Adilabad district of Telangana where his father ran a hotel and real estate business. A few years ago they moved to Hyderabad and settled down at Shastripuram in Rajendra Nagar area. Hanif’s father and his two older brothers are also doing real estate business here. Officials said that Hanif completed his B.Tech from Shadhan College of Engineering and Technology and went to UK to do MS four years ago.
After completing his studies he moved to Dubai where he worked and came to Hyderabad last September to meet his family. He also got engaged to the BDS student and left for Dubai a few days later. The last time he spoke with the family was when he called them to inform that he was going to join the ISIS fight in Syria. The text message his father received did not say much except that Hanif died and was buried there.
This is the first case of a Hyderabadi youth who actually joined ISIS and getting killed in Syria. Police have earlier foiled attempts of several youth, all engineering graduates, from going to Syria from Hyderabad to join ISIS.
On January 15, Salman Mohiuddin, 32, a resident of Bazaar Ghat under Habeebnagar Police Station in Hyderabad, was detained early morning by Hyderabad Police from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on suspicion that he was flying to Dubai, and from there to Syria via Turkey, intending to join the Islamic State.
On October 29, a former Google employee, Munawad Salman, 26, was detained and put under police surveillance after intelligence agencies suspected that he was traveling to Saudi Arabia with the intention of going to Iraq to join the militant group ISIS.
