That politically experienced husbands often rule by proxy over the seats won by their wives is well known fact, but they also get better halves designated posts de-facto,came to fore during the organisation building workshop of Congress in Khanna Friday.

Even as Congress national vice-president,who addressed the meeting, laid emphasis on empowering the grassroots level workers and especially the women cadre of the party,a number of Congress women councillors missed the workshop even as their husbands filled in the gap, most reaching the venue wearing badges certifying them as “municipal councillors”.

One such de facto “municipal councillor” was Parminder Mehta. Husband of Sushma Mehta,a municipal councillor from Ludhiana,Parminder proudly flaunted the badge dangling from his kurta pocket. A former councillor,Mehta had to give up the seat after it was reserved for women and his wife contested and won from there.

Mehta reasoned that the workshop was related to organisation of the party,“so he knows better because he has remained in active politics for the past many years while the wife is new to this field”.

Similarly,Sunny Bhalla, husband of councillor Deepika Bhalla from Ludhiana, also attended the workshop while his wife remained at home.
