The police are looking for over 200 criminals who have gone untraceable after they were released from jails on parole. The move is an attempt to get more clues about the killers of Dr Narendra Dabholkar. The investigators also held a meeting of retired police officers known for their network of informers, seeking their help in solving the case.

Meanwhile, family members of Dabholkar had a meeting with Pune Police Commissioner Gulabrao Pol on Wednesday. Pol said the police asked Dabholkar’s kin if they have doubts on any person or group. “Family members told us that Dabholkar did not have any dispute with anyone. He was always open for a dialogue,” said Pol.

Hamid,Dabholkar’s son, said,“We would not be satisfied till the assailants are arrested and justice is done. We suspect the role of fundamentalist organisation and those whose interests were hurt because of the anti-superstition movement. But we cannot name anyone now as police are investigating the case.”

Meanwhile,Pol reiterated that Dabholkar’s murder could be “supari killing”. “The murder was well-planned. The location (Omkareshwar bridge) was strategic. There were not many persons at the crime scene. Also, there were multiple ways to escape from the crime scene. Murderers ensured that no evidence is left back. So we suspect it was a supari killing. We have quizzed about 200 criminals in Pune and about 700 in rest of Maharashtra, but so far we have got nothing concrete. Our teams have questioned gangsters in jails. Those criminals out on bail or parole are also being questioned. Search for those who jumped parole is also on,” he said.

CCTV camera footage are being checked. Dabholkar came to Shivajinagar from Mumbai in the early hours of August 20. He reached Shivajinagar around 1.45 am on August 20. A CCTV footage near by shows that he took an autorickshaw. So the police also questioned a few autorickshaw drivers, but no lead was obtained.

Meanwhile, the police have released the sketch of Dabholkar’s killer, prepared on basis of description given by an eyewitness. An eyewitness told cops that number of the motorcycle on which assailants fled was 7756.

The police are also waiting for the ballistic report of empty and live cartridges obtained from the crime scene. “We are probing if these cartridges tally with any other murder,” said Pol. The state Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) is also helping the Pune police in investigation.

Meanwhile,DCP (crime) Rajesh Bansode said,“We have questioned about 96 persons who come for morning walk near the spot where murder took place. There is a possibility that assailants changed the number plate of motorcycle before committing murder. We have questioned about 68 number plate makers in the city. There are 23 teams probing the case. We are sure of cracking the case, but no time frame can be stated as of now.”
