The Punjab and Haryana High Court Monday stayed Haryana government’s notifications granting reservation to Jats, Jat Sikhs, Rors, Tyagis, Bishnois, Jat Muslims and Mulla Jats under special backward class category for employment and admissions to educational institutions.
The decision came from the division bench comprising Justices S K Mittal and H S Sidhu on petitions filed by Murari Lal Gupta and others. However, the court admitted the case for hearing with regular cases as per its turn.
The petitioners had challenged the decision to grant 10 per cent reservation under special backward class category in state government jobs and education institutions to five castes namely Jats, Jat Sikhs, Rors, Tyagis and Bishnois. The state government had later extended this reservation to Jat Muslims and Mulla Jats.
Haryana government told the court that this is a separate case and cannot be compared with the case in which Supreme Court denied reservation to Jats. It was submitted that in this case there are other castes also which have been given reservation.
