The CPI-M in Kerala today alleged that the civic poll victory of one of the accused in the professor’s hand chopping case was due to the support of Congress-led UDF.
Prof Anus,an accused in the case, had won from Vanchinad block division of Valzhakkulam panchayat in Ernakulam district on the ticket of SDPI,the political arm of the Popular Front of India, whose activists were allegedly behind the attack on college lecturer T J Joseph.
Addressing a press meet here,CPI-M state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said the voting figures in the area showed that Anus would not have emerged victorious, without UDF backing.
UDF had won in seven of the eight village panchayat wards in the area, while LDF lifted one seat. In the block division from where Anus won,the UDF candidate could secure only an insignificant portion of the votes.
“This showed that the UDF did not have any qualm even to strike an adjustment with SDPI and support the accused in the hand chopping case,” the CPI-M leader said.
Professor Joseph was attacked on July 4 by suspected activists of PFI for preparing a Malayalam paper with alleged derogatory references to Prophet Mohammad.
