Social activist Anna Hazare has received an anonymous threat letter warning him that he will meet the same fate as that of anti-superstition activist Narendra Dabholkar, who was shot dead in Pune, unless he demands a military rule in the country.
The letter, written on a post-card in Marathi, arrived at the office of Hazares NGO Bhrashtachar Virodhi Jan Andolan (BVJA) in Ralegan Siddhi on August 29.
Our inward register shows the letter arrived on August 29. However,it was read by our volunteers on the evening of August 30 as part of the routine. We informed the local police about the letter today afternoon after which Ahmednagar DySP visited and inquired about the letter, said Annas aide Sanjay Pathade.
Ahmednagar Superintendent of Police Raosaheb Shinde said the letter was deposited in the post office of Ralegan Siddhi itself.
The letter written in meticulous handwriting reads,…Politicians will not pass the Jan Lokpal bill even if you die. Theres no option left but that of an armed revolution on the lines of Egypt. You should demand imposition of military rule in the country, otherwise you will meet same fate as that of (Narendra) Dabholkar.
Democratic ways will not take us anywhere. Congress has failed to eradicate poverty even after enjoying power for 60 years. Because of wrong policies (of the government),3.5 lakh farmers have committed suicide. Around 70 per cent of citizens of the country live in poverty and about 27 crore Indians dont get meals twice a day. About 35,000 children in Maharashtra are malnourished. Theres only one solution to all these issues: armed revolution. Because thats the only language politicians understand. Demands of Naxalites are accepted but ours are ignored, it reads.
Hazare currently enjoys Z-level security cover after he received threats during his agitation demanding setting up of a powerful ombudsman and strong anti-corruption law.
Dabholkar,71,a renowned rationalist and anti-superstition activist, was murdered by bike-borne assailants on the morning of August 20.
The police are yet to trace the murders. Dabholkars office in Pune also received a postcard on the same day (August 29) supporting his killing and threatening other rationalists with the same fate.
Hazare, who returned to India from his 14-day tour to the US on August 29,was unaware about the threat letter as he is currently visiting Bangalore.
Anna is in Bangalore to attend an Art of Living function. As he is travelling,we have not conveyed this to him. He will be informed about the letter after his return to Ralegaon tonight, said Pathade.
On Friday,Hazares lawyer had written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Home Minister R R Patil demanding Z-Plus security cover for anti-corruption crusader.
In view of the current circumstances and Dabholkars murder,I think he should be given Z plus security even if he refuses to accept it, he had said.
Ahmednagar SP Shinde said,The letter has been handed over to us. We are taking additional information about it. It seems the letter was deposited in the Ralegan Siddhi post office directly. We have tightened the present Z-security provided to Hazare.
